Description

Loimer 'Lenz' Riesling with a scents of fresh orange and hints of spice. A vibrant, fresh palate with bright acidity. The acidity and residual sugar impart to the wine a beautiful, lengthy finish. A light, lively Riesling. It is situated 200-400 m above sea level, the climate of the Kamp Valley is characterised by cool nights and warm days, with a long, sunny autumn. The high summer temperatures are mitigated by the River Danube and the Waldviertel (forested area). Its long growing season and the difference in temperature between night and day, gives the grapes a chance to reach full ripeness and develop fine perfumes and flavours. Soils are mixed, and well-drained, with Gföhl gneiss (coarse-grained, metamorphic rock containing quartz, felspar and mica) subsoil. The conditions in spring were quite difficult. Because of a winter frost, bud break was uneven and somewhat ‘patchy‘ then a late frost in May increased the damage dramatically. Dry weather throughout the season further delayed growth. Summer, however, did as much as possible to counteract what had occurred. Rain and heat helped the vines to recover and the relatively small amount of grapes developed wonderfully. The dry autumn weather was ideal to the point that the harvest date could be chosen practically at random - and fantastically ripe grapes could be picked. Even though the quantity was rather modest, they were nevertheless extremely happy with the quality. The grapes were harvested with 17.5 degree to 19.5 degree KMW (the measure of ripeness and sugar development) and brought to the cellar in small crates. Depending on the quality, they were either whole-bunch pressed or crushed and then macerated for a short time, which helps to release more flavour. After careful fermentation, Lenz was matured on its fine lees in steel tanks, and then bottled in February 2013 so that freshness and primary flavours would be retained as much as possible. It comes with the vintage information as follows: Region: Kamptal, Lower Austria; Winemaker: Fred Loimer; Alcohol (ABV): 12%; Acidity: 6.5 g per litre and Residual sugar: 5.1 g per litre.
