Old trees are chopped down and their wood is used to make new instruments. At the same time new trees are planted, creating a renewable system of use. Meinl uses Parà rubber trees (hevea brasiliensis, Muell.Arg.) sourced exclusively from plantations that conform to the guidelines of the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. This applies equally to the mahogany we use, which is cultivated in Indonesia. Other wood types used by Meinl are also sourced from sustainable plantations or environmentally-friendly forestry. Artificial and shatter-proof materials such as fibreglass are also built into Meinl instruments in order to make them extra hard-wearing.
