Description

This book investigates the socioeconomic factors that triggered Tunisia’s "revolution for dignity” and the current issues and challenges facing its economy while suggesting mechanisms and instruments for their resolution. The author begins by analyzing the roots of the revolution and the post-revolution situation from a political sociology perspective and then diagnoses the Tunisian economy before and after the revolution and identifies the multidimensional binding constraints preventing it from escaping the middle-income trap. The book then explores the pillars of an inclusive development strategy that Tunisia should pursue. The emphasis is made on building inclusive institutions, developing a new social contract and reinventing the country's leadership. Beyond the institutional dimension, the author suggests innovative financial channels, discusses the strategy of a successful integration of the Tunisian economy in the global economy as well as the pillars of its transformation into a knowledge-based economy.    Review “This is an eye-opener well thought book, Professor Mahmoud Sami Nabi offers us to better understand the long protracting political transition of Tunisia. If the unique nascent Arab democracy were to consolidate, fixing its economy is an urgent matter, professors Nabi is stressing. The economic woes of Tunisia, past and present, are exposed in a very clear and substantiated ways. Departing from the mainstream and too conventional recommendations, innovative approach and paths to rebuild the Tunisian economy are offered. This book is a must-read. It is the only one that it is totally dedicated to the Tunisian social and economic issues which have been neglected by the political class and analysts.” (Hedi Larbi, Professor at Political Sciences Institute in Paris; Senior scholar at Kennedy school of Government, Harvard University; Former Minister of sustainable development (Tunisia) and Director at the World Bank, USA) “Professor Nabi achieved an amazing tour de force by analyzing, with an incredible ease and clarity, the present situation of the Tunisian economy in the aftermath of a revolution that epitomizes the Arab Spring. He brilliantly describes several directions for achieving an inclusive development and building a competitive knowledge-based modern economy. This is definitely a treasure of a book that deserves to be  widely shared.” (Mohamed Haouari, Professor at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, USA)   From the Back Cover “This book is a must-read.
