Ik ben enorm trots dat we als KNRM al tweehonderd jaar het individu een beetje aan de kant zetten om samen iets voor een ander te betekenen.” De Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij (KNRM) en waterrijk Nederland zijn al twee eeuwen onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden. Dat jubileum wordt gevierd met deze prachtige publicatie. Edward Zwitser duikt in de bewogen geschiedenis van de KNRM, geïllustreerd met indrukwekkend historisch beeldmateriaal. In die tweehonderd jaar is er veel veranderd, zeker op het gebied van materieel, maar de basisprincipes zijn dezelfde gebleven: kosteloze hulpverlening en het werken met vrijwilligers, gefinancierd door donaties. Fotografen Robin de Puy en Jeroen Hofman presenteren een hedendaags beeldverhaal waarbij foto’s van reddingstations, reddingboten en maritieme landschappen worden afgewisseld met indringende portretten. Maria Barnas interviewde een groot aantal vrijwillige redders, die met onverminderd enthousiasme deel uitmaken van de grote familie die de KNRM is geworden.
