Leerlingen leren samen in tweetallen, teams van vier of met de hele groep. Ze kunnen zich daarbij niet verschuilen achter anderen of meeliften op de inzet van teamgenoten. Dat is het grote verschil met ‘gewoon samenwerken’. Om dit te bereiken bedacht dr. Spencer Kagan honderden didactische structuren: coöperatieve werkvormen die volgens vaste stappen verlopen. Daardoor weet iedereen wat er van hem of haar wordt verwacht. Deze structuren, zoals TweePraat of Genummerde Koppen Bij Elkaar, hebben geen inhoud. Je kunt ze dus voor allerlei vakken en doeleinden gebruiken. Elke Kagan-structuur is zo opgezet dat ieders bijdrage nodig is, dat elke leerling aan te spreken is op het resultaat en dat zo veel mogelijk leerlingen tegelijkertijd actief zijn. Kagan Coöperatief Leren is echter meer dan het inzetten van coöperatieve werkvormen. Het omvat het geheel aan interventies om een coöperatief klassenklimaat te creëren, waarin leerlingen met plezier van en met elkaar leren. Deze complete aanpak heeft een aantal bewezen effecten: •alle leerlingen (ongeacht hun cognitieve niveau) halen betere leerresultaten; •onderlinge relaties in de klas verbeteren; •leerlingen groeien enorm in hun sociale vaardigheden; •het is breinvriendelijk: de aanpak sluit aan bij de manier waarop onze hersenen het liefste leren. Dit effect ontstaat niet met één interventie of een losse werkvorm, maar met het totaal aan coöperatieve leerstrategieën die in dit boek worden beschreven. Kagan Coöperatief Leren is geschikt voor alle onderwijsvormen, van primair tot voortgezet en beroepsonderwijs, en voor alle andere situaties waarin met groepen wordt gewerkt.
