Description

Parkinson’s disease is a disorder of the nervous system that causes difficulties with movement, muscle control, and balance. It is caused by a loss of nerve cells in part of the brain called the substantia nigra which leads to a reduction in a chemical called dopamine in the brain. Dopamine plays a vital role in regulating the movement of the body. A reduction in dopamine is responsible for many of the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (NHS.UK). This book is a comprehensive guide to the diagnosis and management of Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders. Beginning with an overview of movement disorders and their epidemiology, the next section discusses Parkinson’s disease, its genetics and symptoms, and young onset disease. The following sections cover non-motor symptoms, imaging and diagnostic tests in movement disorders, treatment of Parkinson’s, atypical Parkinsonism, hyperkinetic and secondary movement disorders, ataxias, and other movement disorders including restless leg syndrome, prion diseases, and emergency scenarios. The final chapters explore the use of Botulinum Toxin (Botox) in the treatment of movement disorders. With an internationally recognised editor and author team, the second edition of this book has been fully revised and updated to provide clinicians with the latest advances and technologies in the field.
