This two-volume work offers a comprehensive history and description of The Palace of Christian VII at the royal castle, Amalienborg, in Copenhagen. The palace was created by the architect Nicolai Eigtved, whose richly varied, yet carefully controlled style secured him a position among the foremost representatives of Rococo in European architecture. The palace was built for King Frederik Vs friend and counsellor Adam Gottlob Moltke, and through a combination of ambition, good taste and ample financial resources he made the mansion with its sumptuous interiors the most impressive private residence in Denmark. Later refinements were made by leading architects of the epoch, N.-H. Jardin and C. F. Harsdorff. When Christiansborg Palace burnt down two years after Moltkes death, Christian VII bought the mansion and made it his residence hence its present name and the title of this book.
