Friedrich Wilhelm II. von Preußen gilt bei Historikern als notorischer Versager, der das angeblich intakte Erbe Friedrichs des Großen verspielt haben und ursächlich für die Niederlage gegen Frankreich im Jahr 1806 gewesen sein soll. Geisterseherei, Bigamie, Günstlings- und Mätressenwirtschaft, eine reaktionäre Innenpolitik, Verschwendung und unnötige Kriege werden ihm nachgesagt. Eine unvoreingenommene Bewertung der Fakten und Quellen führt zu einem anderen Ergebnis: Der König regierte weitgehend selbständig, seine beiden Ehen zur linken Hand waren der Ausdruck tiefer Religiosität, die Privatausgaben waren mäßig und mit seinen Kriegen gewann er große Teile Polens, die Preußen 1814/15 als Tauschobjekte halb Sachsen und die Rheinprovinz einbrachten. Zwar unterließ Friedrich Wilhelm II. die dringend notwendige Reform des friderizianischen Systems. Aber unter dessen Bedingungen war dieser musisch begabte Monarch gemessen an den Maßstäben seiner Zeit keineswegs erfolglos und braucht den Vergleich mit den meisten Hohenzollernkönigen nicht zu scheuen. Von 1983 bis 1987 Referendardienst in Bremen. 1988 Promotion an der Universität Hamburg (jur.) und Zulassung als Rechtsanwalt. 1994 Promotion an der Universität Bremen (phil.).
