Poseedor de una inteligencia penetrante y de una intuición agudísima, el autor da muestras de haber tomado perfectamente la medida al mundo contemporáneo y al hombre mismo. Cada una de las afirmaciones soporta una realidad profunda, considerable en mayor o menor medida. Nunca dispara al aire, ni da puntada sin hilo. Es provocador en cuanto que no se deja arrastrar por la modernidad, algo que a su vez le convierte en reaccionario (Al hombre moderno le es indiferente no hallar la libertad en su vida, si la halla ensalzada en los discursos de quienes lo oprimen). Pero como él mismo dice: «Ser reaccionario es haber aprendido que no se puede demostrar, ni convencer, sino invitar». Eso son precisamente cada uno de sus escolios: una invitación a considerar lo permanente, lo inmutable. En cualquier caso, Gómez Dávila nunca se sintió incómodo con la etiqueta de reaccionario; al fin y al cabo «el progresista siempre triunfa y el reaccionario siempre tiene razón. Tener razón en política no consiste en ocupar el escenario, sino en anunciar desde el primer acto los cadáveres del quinto»
