Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) fue un ave nocturna y un cazador de sueños. Nació en Providence (Nueva Inglaterra), donde vivió la mayor parte de su corta vida, que dedicó a contemplar las estrellas, leer con avidez cuanto caía en sus manos y, sobre todo, escribir (poesía, ensayo, relatos y una ingente correspondencia). Al refugiarse en su hermético mundo onírico, Lovecraft se embarcó en un viaje sin retorno hacia una nueva dimensión: el miedo cósmico, el «terror de los espacios infinitos», que estremecía a Pascal. Lo que caracteriza la ficción lovecraftiana es la utilización de elementos de la tradición gótica reinterpretados en términos científicos. Sus relatos expresan la soledad y la pequeñez de la condición humana en un universo infinito y amoral, azaroso y hostil, carente de significado y angustiosamente ajeno a nuestras preocupaciones y cavilaciones. «Lovecraft fue –como dijo el escritor Fritz Leiber– el Copérnico del relato de horror. Desplazó el foco del temor sobrenatural del hombre y su pequeño mundo y sus dioses, a las estrellas y a los negros e insondables abismos del espacio intergaláctico». En el universo lovecraftiano siempre hay una presencia amenazadora, pero no se sabe bien qué es. En esta segunda y última entrega de la Narrativa completa de Lovecraft, el lector encontrará los relatos escritos entre 1927 y 1937, década fecunda en la que HPL, además de enriquecer sus espantosos Mitos de Cthulhu con cuentos como La sombra sobre Innsmouth, El horror de Dunwich, El ser del umbral o El Asiduo de las tinieblas, alumbra sus dos únicas novelas: El caso de Charles Dexter Ward y En las montañas de la locura. Este volumen completa el periplo interior que Lovecraft emprendió a lo más profundo de sí mismo, a las regiones más subterráneas y sombrías de la psique.
