El esfuerzo que llevó a cabo Joan Coromines (o Corominas, según se escribe a veces) fue inmenso, y lo inició en paralelo con sus también magnos trabajos sobre el catalán. Poseía una cultura lingüística inmensa, que abarcaba todo el conjunto de lenguas de la Península: catalán, gallego, portugués, leonés, vasco, mozárabe, judeoespañol, etc., conocimientos que le permitieron profundizar en el estudio del castellano. Esta sabiduría y erudición se beneficiaron de la aplicación de los criterios científicos más rigurosos, que situaron la obra en la vanguardia de los estudios lexicográficos y etimológicos de las lenguas románicas, lugar en el que permanece al cabo de tantos años de su aparición.
