El ministerio del Conde Duque de Olivares (1621-1643) es una época clave en la historia de la España moderna. Entre 1978 y 1981 el profesor John H. Elliott, quien por entonces estaba preparando su conocida biografía política del Conde Duque, publicó con la ayuda de José Francisco de la Peña dos tomos con algunos de los más importantes papeles de estado y cartas. El libro, cuidadosamente anotado y con precisos estudios preliminares a cada documento, pronto se convirtió en una fuente imprescindible para el conocimiento de dicha época. Agotada desde hace mucho tiempo la edición original de la Editorial Alfaguara, se presenta ahora una nueva impresión de los dos tomos, aquí incorporados en uno solo, ampliamente revisada y puesta al día por los profesores John H. Elliott y Fernando Negredo del Cerro. Se trata de una obra fundamental, de valor permanente para el estudio de la España del siglo XVII, y que dentro de poco se complementará con un nuevo tomo con la correspondencia, hasta ahora inédita, del Conde Duque con el Cardenal Infante.
