Elle est grande, elle est hautaine, elle a le teint très blanc, un double menton, mauvais caractère, 27 ans déjà. En l'an 1600, Marie de Médicis épouse Henri IV. C'est un mariage d'argent : les Médicis sont une richissime famille de banquiers florentins devenus grands-ducs de Toscane. C'est un mariage politique : le Pape et l'Espagne veulent amarrer la France au catholicisme après 45 ans de troubles et de guerres religieuses. Entre Henri IV et Marie de Médicis, la vie conjugale devient souvent un enfer. Maîtresses, scènes de ménage, histoires d'argent ; Sully arbitre comme il peut. Quand Henri IV est assassiné, son fils Louis XIII n'a que 8 ans et demi. Marie de Médicis devient Régente. Elle met la France au pillage pour acheter la tranquillité des nobles, remplir les poches de ses favoris Leonora Galligaï et Concino Concini, et satisfaire une passion sans frein pour les diamants. Chassée du pouvoir par Louis XIII en 1617, elle est exilée au château de Blois, s'en évade par une échelle de corde, et fait deux années de suite la guerre à son fils. Elle se raccommode avec lui grâce à Richelieu, un jeune évêque dont elle fait la fortune et qui grâce à elle devient cardinal et premier ministre. Reine-Mère assagie et respectée, elle construit le Palais du Luxembourg à Paris, et commande à Rubens l'histoire de sa vie - un peu arrangée - en 24 tableaux. Mais elle a le démon de la jalousie et de l'intrigue. Richelieu est devenu trop puissant à son goût. Elle veut sa disgrâce, ne l'obtient pas, et, en 1631, s'enfuit du royaume de France, qu'elle quitte pour toujours. Onze ans d'exil et d'errances en Belgique, en Angleterre, en Allemagne où elle meurt dans la ville de Cologne. Onze ans de complots, négociant avec l'Espagne ennemie de la France, dressant contre Louis XIII son jeune frère Gaston d'Orléans avant de se brouiller aussi avec celui-ci. Elle meurt solitaire et dans la gêne en 1642, quelques mois avant Richelieu et Louis XIII.
