Este é um estudo qualitativo sobre as perspetivas do povo burundiano, dos líderes e da comunidade internacional relativamente ao papel de uma Comissão de Verdade e Reconciliação na promoção da reconciliação no Burundi. A literatura sobre justiça transicional defende que as CVR promovem a reconciliação. Segundo Lederach, a reconciliação é um ponto de encontro entre a verdade e a misericórdia, a justiça e a paz. O objetivo é explorar como o povo burundiano considera que uma comissão de verdade e reconciliação pode influenciar a reconciliação no Burundi, após décadas de conflito interétnico, catorze anos após o Acordo de Arusha, que sugeriu a criação dessa comissão, mesmo que esta ainda não tenha sido instituída. O estudo explora também, de forma sucinta, a história do conflito interétnico burundiano durante as eras pré-colonial, colonial e pós-colonial. Após a independência, o país não conseguiu construir a unidade nem uma distribuição igual e justa dos recursos entre os três grupos étnicos (Hutu, Tutsi e Twa). Este estudo sugere que a reconciliação deve ser o resultado de um desenvolvimento gradual de iniciativas locais, como a prática Bashingantahe, que reúne dois indivíduos ou grupos em conflito e os obriga a partilhar uma bebida.
