Diese Studie untersuchte einen neuen Ansatz zur Behandlung bakterieller ulzerativer Infektionen durch die synergistische Kombination eines handelsüblichen Antibiotikums mit einem natürlichen ätherischen Öl. Die Kombination aus dem wirksamsten Öl und dem Antibiotikum wurde in vitro und in vivo untersucht. Das In-vivo-Experiment misst hämatologische Parameter (Hämoglobin), biochemische Parameter (AST, ALT, Albumin, Kreatinin), immunologische Parameter (Gesamt-IgG und Gesamt-IgM), antibakterielle (durch Nachweis der Bakterienlast), entzündungshemmende (durch TAC-Assay) und Entzündungserkennung pro Zelle sowie die Heilungsaktivität verschiedener Behandlungen (Ciprofloxacin, Thymianöl und deren synergistische Kombination) durch Reparatur der Schäden an den Epithelzellen bei erwachsenen männlichen Albino-Sprague-Dawley-Ratten. Die Kombination von Thymianöl und Ciprofloxacin zeigte eine synergistische Wirkung, die sich als wirksamer bei der Hemmung des Wachstums von S. flexneri, der Heilung von Kolonulzera und der Verringerung der Infiltration der Lamina propria mit Entzündungszellen sowie bei der Verbesserung der Werte von Hämoglobin, Leberenzymen, Albumin, Kreatinin, der gesamten antioxidativen Kapazität, Gesamt-IgG und Gesamt-IgM erwies.
