Description
A terapia fotodinâmica antimicrobiana (aPDT) é uma modalidade de tratamento em evolução em que a luz de um determinado comprimento de onda é utilizada para excitar um fotossensibilizador específico (PS) que medeia a destruição bacteriana. Um ensaio controlado e aleatório de aPDT no tratamento da periodontite crónica mostra o potencial deste tratamento na melhoria dos parâmetros clínicos, baseados no paciente e microbianos no grupo de teste em comparação com o grupo de controlo e, por conseguinte, pode ser proposto como um adjuvante da destartarização convencional e do planeamento radicular, a fim de melhorar os resultados do tratamento da periodontite crónica. Além disso, pela primeira vez, os espectros de autofluorescência induzida por laser registados in situ a partir da placa dentária acumulada na superfície do dente mostram a aplicabilidade desta técnica na discriminação clínica entre vários graus de placa.
