El fósforo es el segundo nutriente limitante después del nitrógeno. Es uno de los nutrientes clave e influye en el desarrollo temprano del cultivo y en el inicio del tubérculo, el tamaño del tubérculo y la gravedad específica del tubérculo. El rendimiento final de los tubérculos depende de su cuajado, de su velocidad de crecimiento y de su duración. El fósforo influye en el crecimiento y el rendimiento de la patata de varias maneras. La gestión del fósforo es un componente crítico en los sistemas de producción de patata, ya que la patata tiene unas necesidades de P relativamente altas y utiliza el P del suelo de forma ineficiente. El fósforo favorece el rápido desarrollo de la canopia, la división celular de las raíces, el cuajado de los tubérculos y la síntesis de almidón. Un nivel adecuado de P es esencial para optimizar el rendimiento de los tubérculos, el contenido de sólidos, la calidad nutricional y la resistencia a algunas enfermedades. La eficiencia de la patata en el uso del fósforo es menor (10-15 % aproximadamente), ya que se trata de un cultivo de raíces poco profundas. Un cultivo sano de patata elimina del suelo unos 25-30 kg de P2O5/ha, lo que indica que la necesidad de fósforo de la patata es mucho mayor que la de la mayoría de los cereales. Por lo tanto, este libro está diseñado para educar a optimizar las necesidades de fósforo de la patata a través de fuentes orgánicas e inorgánicas.
