Die Hepatologie ist ein Teilgebiet der Medizin, das sich mit der Untersuchung, Vorbeugung, Diagnose und Behandlung von Krankheiten befasst, die die Leber, die Gallenblase, den Gallenbaum und die Bauchspeicheldrüse betreffen. Der Begriff Hepatologie leitet sich von den griechischen Wörtern "hepatikos" und "logia" ab, die jeweils Leber und Studium bedeuten. Weltweit sind Millionen von Menschen von Hepatitis betroffen, die mit verschiedenen negativen Folgen wie Lebertransplantation und Leberkrebs in Verbindung gebracht wird. Insbesondere Hepatitis B und Hepatitis C sind die Hauptursachen für Leberkrebs, während Alkoholmissbrauch mit Erkrankungen wie Zirrhose und anderen schweren Komplikationen in Verbindung gebracht wird. Über zwei Milliarden Menschen haben sich irgendwann einmal mit Hepatitis B infiziert, und etwa 350 Millionen Menschen sind Dauerträger. Dank der weit verbreiteten Impfung und der Blutuntersuchungen ist die Häufigkeit von Hepatitis B deutlich zurückgegangen. Dennoch sind Hepatitis B und Hepatitis C für bis zu 80 % der Leberkrebsfälle verantwortlich. Neben diesen Hepatitisarten haben Hepatologen vor allem mit Virushepatitis und alkoholbedingten Lebererkrankungen zu tun.
