Description

Setaria italica (SI) gehört zur Familie der Poaceae und ist gemeinhin als Fuchsschwanzhirse bekannt. Sie ist in Ostasien heimisch. In Indien wird sie vor allem in Andhra Pradesh und Tamil Nadu angebaut. Der essbare Teil der Pflanze ist der Samen, der als süßes oder herzhaftes Nahrungsmittel verzehrt werden kann. Er hat bestimmte medizinische Eigenschaften, wie z. B. lindernd, adstringierend, verdauungsfördernd und appetitanregend. Außerdem hat der wässrige Extrakt aus den Samen von Setaria italica starke antidiabetische Eigenschaften. Dies könnte auf seine stimulierende Wirkung auf die Insulinsekretion zurückzuführen sein, die Veränderungen im Stoffwechsel von Kohlenhydraten, Proteinen und Lipiden bewirkt. Möglicherweise reduziert er auch den oxidativen Stress, indem er das antioxidative Abwehrsystem stärkt. Die in den Samen von Setaria italica enthaltenen Glykoside und Alkaloide sind sekundäre Pflanzenstoffe, die nachweislich antidiabetische Eigenschaften haben.
