Le difficoltà di trattamento di questi pazienti sono aumentate a causa dell'emergere di resistenze a tutte le attuali classi di antibiotici. Un aumento significativo dello S. aureus resistente alla meticillina negli ospedali. Tuttavia, le differenze regionali nei fattori epidemiologici dell'MRSA sembrano essere significative. L'individuazione rapida e affidabile dell'MRSA è essenziale per garantire il trattamento ottimale dei pazienti con infezioni da stafilococco, nonché per le procedure di controllo delle infezioni. Nel presente studio sono stati raccolti isolati clinici di S. aureus da quattro ospedali. Tutti gli isolati di S. aureus confermati sono stati sottoposti a test di suscettibilità antimicrobica, eseguiti con la tecnica Kirby-Bauer modificata. Il valore predittivo positivo dei test eseguiti per la definizione di MRSA sulla base della MIC è risultato superiore a quello della diffusione su disco. Si è concluso che la resistenza all'oxacillina sulla MIC era più affidabile della diffusione in disco per definire gli isolati di MRSA.
