Nach der Unabhängigkeit erlebte Indien viele Höhen und Tiefen. Nach dem Entstehen der Welthandelsorganisation hat Indien eine Reformpolitik verfolgt. Die verschiedenen Wirtschaftssektoren haben nach den wirtschaftlichen Reformmaßnahmen - Liberalisierung, Globalisierung und Privatisierung - unterschiedliche Erfahrungen gemacht. In einem Land wie Indien ist die produktive Beschäftigung jedoch von zentraler Bedeutung für die Strategie zur Armutsbekämpfung und zur Herstellung wirtschaftlicher Gleichheit in der Gesellschaft. Die Ergebnisse des ungehinderten Wirkens der Marktkräfte sind jedoch nicht immer gerecht, vor allem in Indien, wo einige Gruppen durch die Globalisierung benachteiligt werden könnten.
