Die Entwicklung des ländlichen Raums war schon immer ein wichtiges Thema in allen Diskussionen über die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung, insbesondere in den Entwicklungsländern auf der ganzen Welt. MGNREGA zielt darauf ab, das in Artikel 41 der indischen Verfassung verankerte Ziel zu erreichen, „den Bürgern das Recht auf Arbeit zu geben“. NREGA wurde nach fast 56 Jahren Erfahrung mit anderen Beschäftigungsprogrammen für den ländlichen Raum ins Leben gerufen, zu denen sowohl zentral geförderte als auch von den Bundesstaaten aufgelegte Programme gehören. MGNREGA ist also nicht nur eine Wohlfahrtsinitiative, sondern auch eine Entwicklungsmaßnahme, die die indische Wirtschaft zu neuem Wohlstand führen kann. Dieses Studienbuch befasst sich mit MGNREGS und seiner Umsetzung im ländlichen Raum, einem Programm, das den Lebensunterhalt der Haushalte in den ländlichen Gebieten des Landes sichert.
