Данное исследование рассматривает процесс расширения прав и возможностей женщин в Руанде после 1994 года, уделяя особое внимание двенадцати кооперативам, работающим в регионе Маяга, и тому, как эти кооперативы расширяют возможности женщин, их домохозяйств и общества в целом. Традиционное руандийское общество всегда было связано патриархатом, который не оценивал репродуктивную роль женщин как экономически продуктивную в их домохозяйствах и обществе в целом. С одной стороны, такое понимание было изменено в Руанде после 1994 года благодаря стремлению правительства к гендерному равенству на высшем уровне политического руководства посредством прогрессивной политики и законодательства.
