Die nationale Perspektive und ihre Jugend: Einigen Wissenschaftlern zufolge wird das moderne Zentrum in der Türkei durch den Kemalismus repräsentiert, während die Peripherie durch den politischen Islam geprägt ist. Dieses Buch untersucht die islamistische Politik der 1970er Jahre in der Türkei und konzentriert sich dabei auf die Bewegung des Nationalen Ausblicks und ihre Jugendorganisation, die Raiders. Das Buch argumentiert, dass die Debatte über die Beziehung des Islams zur Moderne dazu neigt, das Phänomen des politischen Islams zu essentialisieren, während das, was die Natur islamistischer Bewegungen bestimmt, nicht der Islam selbst ist, sondern die sozio-historischen Kontexte, in denen sie entstehen. Es wird gesagt, dass der Nationale Ausblick die Randgruppen in das Zentrum beförderte und so zur demokratischen Entwicklung beitrug; dabei wird jedoch vernachlässigt, dass die Eliten der Bewegung enge Verbindungen zum säkularen Zentrum hatten und das Ziel verfolgten, eine homogen-moderne Nation zu schaffen. Und die Bewegung war nicht frei von internen Konflikten. Andererseits zeigt das Buch, dass das Ziel der Raiders nicht die Selbstintegration, sondern die Eroberung des Zentrums war, was zu den Kontroversen zwischen ihnen und der Zentrale des Nationalen Ausblicks führte. Dieses Buch soll all jenen helfen, die sich mit dem Phänomen des politischen Islam und seinem Verhältnis zur Demokratie beschäftigen.
