El presente trabajo se desarrolla desde una investigación aplicada, parte de estudiar algunas de las aproximaciones teóricas que abordan la relación entre representaciones mentales y aprehensión de conceptos matemáticos, al igual que los tipos y dificultades del conocimiento matemático, para luego realizar un diagnóstico a partir del análisis de las representaciones mentales que un grupo de estudiantes tiene sobre el concepto de fracción y teniendo en cuenta éste, se plantea una serie de tareas apoyadas en el método de aprendizaje cooperativo, utilizando estrategias como trabajo entre pares y construcción y utilización de material manipulativo de tal forma que se logren analizar algunos fenómenos cognitivos y didácticos en relación con el aprendizaje del concepto de fracción que emergen cuando se trabaja con representaciones mentales y materiales manipulativos, para finalmente analizar las producciones de los estudiantes y formular una interpretación del impacto del trabajo, con el objetivo de generar en los agentes involucrados en el proceso enseñanza-aprendizaje una reflexión respecto al actual paradigma pedagógico orientado hacia la didáctica de las matemáticas
