Descartes, il y a près de 500 ans, énonçait que l'être humain devait se "rendre comme maître et possesseur de la Nature". Une telle visée ne pouvait qu'apparaître comme une utopie. Au fil de quelques siècles, ce rêve prémonitoire s'est mué en un projet technoscientifique de transformation du monde. A partir des dernières décennies du XXesiècle et surtout du début du XXIe siècle, les innovations technoscientifiques toujours plus nombreuses produisent un mouvement vu, tout à la fois, comme une révolution numérique, une convergence de technologies, une quatrième révolution industrielle, ou encore comme une disruption, qui s'imposerait à l'échelle du monde entier. Un tel mouvement s'identifie à une direction déterminée, celle d'avoir toujours plus pour vivre toujours mieux, comme la condition d'une émancipation individuelle. Mais à suivre le contre-mouvement écologique et social, l'humanité, pour sa survie, devrait s'engager dans une autre voie que celle d'un développement vertigineux des technosciences et d'une expansion généralisée du marché. Tous les chapitres abordent, dans une perspective anthropologique, des aspects particuliers du thème général de la 'maîtrise du monde'.
