Le e-learning est une modalité d'apprentissage actuellement en gésine dans les bureaucraties professionnelles que sont les Universités. Vouloir y pérenniser de tels changements nécessite de comprendre en profondeur les exigences de cet enseignement centré sur l'étudiant. Il est avéré que ce dernier évolue davantage dans un environnement qui lui est personnel qu'universitaire. Nous posons de fait la problématique de la complémentarité des ressources pédagogiques mises à disposition par le dispositif de formation (dont la technologie) et celles propres à chaque étudiant ainsi que de leur substitution. La méthodologie de recherche-action "soft systems methodology" a permis de définir le rôle de l'environnement d'apprentissage de l'étudiant que nous avons qualifié de structurant, d'accompagnement et de didactique. Puis, il a été permis de mettre en évidence les phénomènes de complémentarité et de substitution, et de repérer différentes sources de performance de l'étudiant distant et de comprendre le lien existant entre comportement d'apprentissage et performance d'un cycle d'enseignement à distance avec regroupements.
