Description

His realistic photographs from the GDR practiced photographer Siegfried Wittenburg silent criticism of the GDR regime. He developed for himself the concept of representing everyday life and taking the art-historical term "socialist realism" literally. Life in the GDR provided the motifs, such as the highly acclaimed housing estates on the outskirts of the cities, which were in stark contrast to life in the historical districts. His first publication of realistic views of his living environment triggered fierce reactions: strict rejection of the system faithful on the one, acknowledging approval of the realists on the other. When Wittenburg takes an insight into his stasiacts after the fall of the wall, he is told: "Her life was a wire rope act. One wrong step and you would have crashed." In "A Life as a Wire Rope Act", Siegfried Wittenburg now tells in picture and word of experienced unfreedom and dictatorship, of subtle resistance, of a revolution and the subsequent transformation into a life of freedom and democracy.
