La mayoría de los materiales actualmente utilizados como sustratos para este sistema de producción son de origen sintético, teniendo un serio problema medioambiental al término de su ciclo de uso. Por lo que es necesario generar nuevos conocimientos en materiales que sustituyan o complementen a los actuales, los cuales deben de reunir entre otras características; ser orgánicos, reciclables al término de su utilidad, autóctonos, disponibles todo el año, cercanos a los centros de consumo y baratos. Se estudia la caracterización de la cáscara de almendra, así como su evaluación agronómica como sustrato en los cultivos de melón y tomate. Utilizando como sustrato testigo a la lana de roca.La reutilización de la cáscara de almendra como sustrato, aumentó los valores de todas las propiedades físicas y químicas a excepción de la relación C/N y capacidad y intercambio catiónico la cuales disminuyeron. No existieron diferencias entre lana de roca y cáscara de almendra para la producción de melón y tomate, como tampoco en las diferentes granulometrías. El mayor volumen de contenedor mejoró todos los parámetros analizados. Concluyendo que la cáscara de almendra puede ser utilizada con éxito.
