Description

La producción de hortalizas debe ser inocua y sustentable por las exigencias que hace el consumidor por lo que no basta que el producto final sea de calidad y saludable. Además, se valora el proceso de producción de los alimentos que aseguren el cuidado del medio ambiente, la eficiencia en el uso del agua y la gestión de residuos. Se estima que la superficie de cultivos bajo invernadero genera unas 1.000.000 t de residuos al año que pueden ser reautilizados al transformar los desechos vegetales en sustrato para cultivo sin suelo. Este trabajo describe las características físicas y físico-químicas del compost provenientes de residuos hortícolas de invernadero como sustrato alternativo en cultivo sin suelo. Se sugiere el acondicionamiento previo para la utilización del compost en horticultura. Se hace una evaluación agronómica de su uso en ensayos con tomate y melón, comparando varios tipos de compost con fibra de coco. Se concluye que el uso de compost puro como sustrato alternativo y amigable con el medio ambiente es una posibilidad viable y competitiva, por lo que si éste no se considera como un nuevo sustrato es por razones económicas o empresariales, no técnicas.
