Tras perfilar procesos y periodicidad, ejemplificando con autores y épocas, Lombardi examina metodologías y doctrinas; nos advierte las vocaciones públicas del oficio (mesianismo, misionerismo, escatología), y no para cuestionar un saber sino para mostrar sus límites y compromisos frente a la contemporaneidad. Sin sacrificar su determinación de servir de manual, avanza en el análisis de la cultura y, en esa medida, se produce el encuentro natural con disciplinas paralelas, filosofía, sociología, antropología, eco del diálogo que se nutre de la diversidad, pero sobre todo de la totalidad. Nada de equívocos rigores de la especialización aséptica, la ilustración es el mejor auxilio frente a la tarea de comprensión de un mundo revelándose continuamente en su complejidad. Resulta previsible entonces la elección de los temas finales donde el autor ejecuta lo previamente acordado, especie de muestra de un procedimiento, la escritura encera sus objetos desde la lúcida libertad, escritura ensayística por excelencia.
