En los siglos XVIII y XIX, la Frontera del Sur de Argentina fue el escenario donde se produjeron relaciones interétnicas entre las comunidades indígenas de Pampa-Patagonia, las autoridades del Virreinato y los gobiernos criollos posteriores. En este espacio se produjo un intercambio de bienes entre actores sociales -indígenas, militares, funcionarios, pulperos- que provocó la incorporación de nuevos objetos entre estos grupos. Se han realizado aportes que se focalizan en el análisis de la cultura material de los grupos indígenas y militares de la Frontera del Sur; no obstante, el estudio del rol que tuvieron las bebidas alcohólicas en las relaciones inter e intragrupales, a través de los objetos encontrados en diferentes sitios arqueológicos, resulta ser un abordaje original. Se propone analizar el rol que tuvieron las bebidas alcohólicas en las relaciones entre los aborígenes y los militares presentes en la Frontera del Sur, así como también el papel que jugaron dentro de las relaciones entre cada uno de estos grupos. Se trata de un enfoque pluridisciplinar que se apoya en el análisis de la información proveniente tanto del registro arqueológico como del registro documental.
