Description

01.10 – the series stands for railway enthusiasts still today for the fascination of express train steam operation at the highest level: the strongest German series express train steam locomotive, the highest mileage on German and European scale and the fastest steam-strung express trains in Europe! Their premiere in 1939 was not under any good star: the 01.10 could only shine for a short time in their intended range of applications, then the Second World War caused a drastic decline of the elegant streamlined locomotives. Only in the 1950s at the Deutsche Bundesbahn did the series unfold its maximum performance potential and achieved a unique flourish in the express train service of the DB: Without streamline cladding, modernized and equipped with new boilers and partially oil combustion, the 01.10 series reached the highest monthly mileage of German steam locomotives. 28,000 kilometres. But this also includes finding that their outstanding performances have been purchased with numerous damages and exceptionally high entertainment costs. In May 1975, the 01.10, now referred to as the 012 series, ended the express train steam operation at the Bw Rheine at the DB. According to the great fascination of this locomotive, 9 museum machines are preserved today, two of which are operational. Frank Lüdecke traces the anything but ordinary path of the series from the streamline icon fraught with numerous problems to the Super Pacific of the DB. The focus is on operating machine service, the use in the railway departments and the museum locomotives. The book sets a worthy monument to the most fascinating German steam locomotive for many railway enthusiasts!
