This book explores the relationship between ethnicity and unemployment, and examines why ethnic minorities in the UK have significantly higher unemployment rates than whites. The study begins with a critique of spatial explanations for disproportionate ethnic unemployment; suggesting theories such as spatial mismatch are dated in the context of a 21st century London labour market. The study then examines more pertinent factors; arguing poor education,discrimination and, to a lesser extent, cultural specificity, serve as the critical barriers to ethnic labour market participation. These barriers we reexamined, ethnicity by ethnicity, through the triangulation of statistical and spatial analysis,coupled with interviews from experts in government and education, as well as the unemployed themselves.Ultimately, the study reveals the manifestation of old barriers in new guises; and concludes with a series of policy recommendations aimed at curbing growing ethnic unemployment.
