Unsere Zeit, die sich auf den Schultern der Mühe und des Fleißes unserer Altvorderen erhebt, krankt an einem gewissen geistigen Überflusse. Die Erbschaft ihres Erwerbes liegt zu leichtem Antritte uns bereit, in diesem Sinne sind wir Epigonen. Daraus ist ein ganz eigentümliches Siechtum entstanden, welches durch alle Verhältnisse hindurch darzustellen die Aufgabe meiner Arbeit ist. Karl Immermann in einem Brief an seinen Bruder im April 1830 Erstdruck: Düsseldorf (J. E. Schaub) 1836. Neuausgabe mit einer Biographie des Autors. Herausgegeben von Karl-Maria Guth. Berlin 2019. Textgrundlage ist die Ausgabe: Karl Immermann: Werke. Herausgegeben von Benno von Wiese, Band 1-5, Frankfurt a.M., Wiesbaden: Athenäum, 1971-1977. Die Paginierung obiger Ausgabe wird in dieser Neuausgabe als Marginalie zeilengenau mitgeführt. Dieses Buch folgt in Rechtschreibung und Zeichensetzung obiger Textgrundlage.
