Seit Benno von Wieses Werkmonographie und Harry Mayncs Biographie Immermanns sind fast 50 beziehungsweise 100 Jahre vergangen, so daß eine neue Biographie, deren Fehlen Friedrich Sengle schon 1971 monierte, dringend notwendig erscheint. Durch die Veröffentlichung der Briefe, Tagebücher und Werke sowie die literaturwissenschaftliche Forschung sind neue Materialien und Perspektiven zu Leben und Werk Immermanns erarbeitet worden, die diese Biographie erstmals auswertet. Im Fokus stehen dabei das Verhältnis von Autor, Werk und Öffentlichkeit, das soziale Umfeld der Familie Immermann, Freundeskreise sowie Beziehungen zu namhaften Zeitgenossen, zu Institutionen wie Verlagen und Zeitschriften. Durch Längsschnitte mit den Schwerpunkten Theater und Maskierung, Satire, Werk und Beruf kann diese Biographie Leben und Schaffen des Dichters sowie deren Darstellung strukturieren. Review «Mit seiner Immermann-Biographie hat Peter Hasubek ein neues Standardwerk vorgelegt, das auf seiner jahrzehntelangen Beschäftigung mit dem Werk und Wirken Carl Immermanns fußt. Damit schließt Hasubek eine bereits von Friedrich Sengle angemahnte Forschungslücke. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte umfassen die Literatur des 19. Jahrhunderts, Romantypologie und Romangeschichte, Rezeptionsforschung, Autobiographie sowie Fabel.
