En la actualidad 70-95% de las cepas de Staphylococcus aureus son resistentes a la penicilina y a la meticilina (MRSA) y algo semejante sucede con Escherichia coli y Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Sumado a ésto, los antibióticos en uso actual son tóxicos y su uso está frecuentemente asociado con efectos secundarios indeseables. En esta tesis se aborda una temática novedosa para revertir la resistencia y disminuir la toxicidad de los antibióticos que es la combinación de los antibióticos de uso en clínica con una serie de chalconas (mezclas binarias) y adicionalmente con rutina (mezclas ternarias) con el objetivo de encontrar sinergismo. En esas combinaciones, el antibiótico alcanza la misma actividad a menores concentraciones por lo que se disminuye el riesgo de crear resistencia y producir toxicidad, e incluso se logra una actividad superior a la que producía cuando actuaba solo. Las chalconas son conocidos antibacterianos por lo que su combinación con antibióticos supone una alta posibilidad de encontrar sinergismo.
