Die vorliegende Arbeit versteht sich als eine kontrastive Analyse zu den ergativen Verben im Deutschen und im Arabischen. Ergative Verben verhalten sich syntaktisch auffällig anders als die bisher unter "transitiv" bzw. "intransitiv" bezeichneten Verben. Kennzeichnend ist ihr passivisches Verhalten trotz der offensichtlich aktiven grammatischen Form. Die direkt von der Handlung betroffene Konstituente steht im Nominativ, was den klassischen Subjektbegriff in Frage stellt. Außerdem haben ergative Verben eine Reihe weiterer Eigenschaften und weisen viele Restriktionen beim Gebrauch auf. Am Beispiel des Deutschen und Arabischen versucht die Autorin, Antworten auf die folgenden Fragen zu geben: In wie weit reicht die Syntax zur Deutung dieses sprachlichen Phänomens aus? Ist eine Deutung unter Rückgriff auf die Semantik erforderlich? In wie weit lassen sich Ergativa von Reflexiv-und Passivkonstruktionen abgrenzen?
