Die Globalisierung hat die Komplexität in der Automobilindustrie drastisch erhöht. Die damit verbundenen Komplexitätskosten werden zum ausschlaggebenden Kostenfaktor. Als Ansatz zur Komplexitätsreduzierung wird in dieser Arbeit die Realisierung von Kommunalitäten vorgestellt. Unter Kommunalitäten werden dabei Synergien zwischen Produkten verstanden, die auf der gemeinsamen Nutzung von Produkt-, Technologie- oder Design-Plattformen beruhen. Für internationale Unternehmen ist es entscheidend neben lokalen Kommunalitäten auch regionale und globale Kommunalitäten zu schaffen, um die Produktkomplexität zu reduzieren. Hierfür muss festgelegt werden welche Bauteile und Technologien auf lokaler, regionaler oder globaler Ebene "kommunalisiert" werden. Darüber hinaus muss der internationale Produktentwicklungsprozess koordiniert werden, um die Schaffung der Kommunalitäten sicherzustellen. Das vorgestellte Schalenmodell bietet hierbei methodische Unterstützung, indem es die Priorisierung von Kommunalitäten ermöglicht und Koordinationsmechanismen für den Produktentwicklungsprozess vorschlägt.
