Diese Arbeit stellt die erste detaillierte Untersuchung zur Biodiversität rezenter benthischer Foraminiferen des Flachwasserbereichs der gesamten SW-Küste Afrikas dar. Foraminiferen aus 131 Sedimentproben vom Kap der Guten Hoffnung (34,4° S) bis Südangola (14,2° S) aus 0-200 m Wassertiefe wurden hier neobiogeographisch erfasst. Dabei wurden insgesamt 129 Foraminiferenarten - zum Teil erstmals - identifiziert und auf 34 Tafeln zusammengestellt. Es zeigt sich, dass das hier untersuchte Küstengebiet als Teil des Benguela-Ökosystems, einem der größten Auftriebsgebiete der Welt, durch mehrere einzigartige Eigenschaften bedeutenden Einfluss auf Zusammensetzung und Verbreitung von Foraminiferen besitzt. Abiotische Faktoren, wie beispielsweise die Wassertiefe und -temperatur, der Einfluss von Auftriebswasser und der häufig variierende Sauerstoffgehalt wurden hinsichtlich ihrer Auswirkung auf die Verbreitung benthischer Foraminiferen untersucht. Als entscheidenden Faktor, der die Verbreitung im untersuchten Gebiet hauptsächlich steuert, stellte sich die Verfügbarkeit von Sauerstoff heraus. Zahlreiche Abbildungen, Karten und Schautafeln dokumentieren anschaulich die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit.
