Dieses Buch unterteilt sich in drei wesentliche Abschnitte. Im ersten Teil wird eine Analyse des Long Tail Phänomens vorgenommen, bei dem ein Einblick in die Geschichte, den Erfolg und verschiedene Verteilungsmerkmale, insbesondere die Power-Law-Verteilung, gegeben wird. Außerdem werden verschiedene Recommender-Systeme vorgestellt, die für die Entstehung des Long Tail ausschlaggebend sind.Der zweite Abschnitt beschäftigt sich mit der Erläuterung verschiedener Netzwerktheorien. Hauptpunkte dieses Teils sind skalenfreie Netzwerke und Preferential Attachment. Ziel ist es, Mechanismen herauszufinden, nach denen sich die Anzahl der Verkäufe für bestimmte Verkaufsränge ergibt, um so das Phänomen des Long Tail quantitativ besser beschreiben zu können.Der dritte Abschnitt verwendet die vorgestellten Netzwerktheorien zur Simulation des Long Tail. Am Ende dieses Teil stehen funktionierende Algorithmen auf Basis der Barabási Netzwerktheorie, des Preferential Attachment und Assortative Mixing. Daraus werden Rückschlüsse auf den Einfluss von Recommender-Systemen auf den Long Tail gezogen.
