Anders als Demoskopie und landHiufige Meinung uns lange Zeit glauben machen wollten, hat die Jugend die Erwerbsarbeit inner lich nicht abgeschrieben. 1m Gegenteil: Fur die Mehrheit gilt, daB sie Arbeit und Bernf bei ihrer Suche nach Identitat einen hohen, haufig einen zentralen Stellenwert zuspricht. Wenn wir auf der Ba sis mehrjiibriger empirischer Forschung dem kulturkritischen Trend, eine ganze Generation in ihrem subjektiven Verhaltnis zur Arbeit krankzuschreiben, nicht folgen, so bedeutet das nicht, die traditionelle Arbeitsmoral zu bestiitigen und fUr in Ordnung zu er klaren. Denn tatsachlich hat sich vieles zwischen der Jugend und der Arbeit veriindert, was uns neue Probleme aufgibt. Unser zentrales Ergebnis liiBt sich in einem Widersprnch zuspit zen: In den personlichen Identitatsentwiirfen hat die Erwerbsarbeit fiir die Mehrheit der Jugendlichen einen hohen Stellenwert, gleich zeitig aber scheint sie flir immer weniger Jugendliche den Kristalli sationspunkt flir kollektive Erfahrungen und die Basis fiir soziale und politische Identitatsbildung abzugeben. Was ein derartig indivi dualistisches VerhiiItnis zur Arbeit politisch bedeutet, wagen wir heute nicht zu entscheiden. Hieriiber bedarf es einer breiten Dis kussion, in der auch unsere Interpretationen zur Disposition stehen.
