Erzahlung, Bild, Auslegung - anhand dieses dreigliedrigen Schemas hat Beatus seinen Kommentar aufgebaut: Auf einen Abschnitt der Johannesapokalypse folgt eine Illustration, an die sich die Erlauterungen anschlieaen. Obwohl der Kommentar darauf angelegt ist, durchblattert, angeschaut und gelesen zu werden, wurden Text und Bild bisher eher getrennt betrachtet. Theologiegeschichte und Philologie beschaftigten sich mit dem Kommentartext, Kunstgeschichte bzw. Bildwissenschaften mit den Illustrationen. In dieser Untersuchung werden beide Dimensionen synoptisch betrachtet. In der Zusammenschau zeigt sich, dass im Kommentar nicht allein der Text der Johannesapokalypse illustriert wird, sondern dass sich einige Bilder auf die Auslegung beziehen und auf diese Weise den Bibeltext und die Deutung verschranken.
