Der Apokalypsenkommentar des Kalabreserabtes Joachim von Fiore ( 1202) ist nach Umfang und geistigem Tiefgang das wohl bedeutendste Produkt seiner Art. Beendet im Jahre 1200 ist er Teil einer Trilogie, mit deren Abfassung Joachim Anfang der 1180er Jahre begonnen hatte: Wahrend dem Psalterium decem cordarum die hermeneutische Grundlegung zugedacht ist, umfasst die Concordia Novi ac Veteris Testamenti die realgeschichtliche Analyse und der Apokalypsenkommentar die gesellschaftskritische Ausfaltung. Letzterer soll zeigen, wie Gott in seiner trinitarischen Seinsweise die Menschheit vom Sundenfall zum himmlischen Dasein fuhrt. Das geschieht in drei Stufen (status), denen je eine der gottlichen Seinsweisen zugeordnet wird: in der Zeit des Alten Testaments Gottvater, in der des Neuen - das heisst der Kirchengeschichte - Gottsohn und in einer Ubergangsphase zur himmlischen Seligkeit der Heilige Geist. In diesen Phasen entfaltet die Menschheit ihre Befahigung zu gottgleicher geistlicher Erkenntnis, die sich in ihrem gesellschaftspolitischen Verhalten niederschlagt, von buchstablicher Gesetzestreue uber erkenntniskritische Einsicht bis hin zur Schau Gottes. Bisher war die Trilogie nur in Form schwer lesbarer Venezianer Fruhdrucke verfugbar. Zum ersten Mal wird sie nun in Kooperation der MGH mit dem Istituto Storico Italiano per il Medio Evo, das fur die Opera omnia Joachims federfuhrend ist, als kritische Ausgabe vorgelegt.
