Erstmals wird neben den bekannten antiken Philosophen auch die Weiterführung der Philosophie in Judentum, Christentum, den verschiedenen Fachwissenschaften und den orientalischen Sprachen in die Entwicklung des antiken Denkens eingeordnet. So entfaltet sich ein breites Panorama des antiken Philosophierens in seiner theoretischen wie seiner sozialen Dimension, in dem die Rolle der Philosophie im Bildungssystem ebenso berücksichtigt ist wie ihr Verhältnis zu Politik, Religion, Rhetorik und den verschiedenen Wissenschaften. Formal gliedert sich die Darstellung nach sechs Hauptepochen antiken Philosophierens: 1) Vorsokratische Philosophie, 2) Klassische Epoche: u.a. Sokrates und Platon, Isokrates, Aristoteles, 3) Hellenismus, 4) Kaiserzeit, 5) Spätantike, 6) Schwelle zum Mittelalter, wobei erstmals ausführlich herausgearbeitet wird, dass die ausgehende Antike im 6. Jhdt. als eigene Epoche der Philosophie zu sehen ist. Historisch-systematische Kurzdarstellungen behandeln die einzelnen Philosophen, philosophischen Richtungen und Schulen sowie weiteren Autoren, welche sich zur Philosophie äußern oder für sich beanspruchen, ein(e) philosophos zu sein oder philosophia zu praktizieren. Diese Einträge berichten über Biographie und Werk im Kontext der Epoche und fassen die jeweiligen philosophischen Theorien der Autoren oder Gruppen zusammen. Ihre regelmäßige Gliederung erleichtert die Nutzung als Nachschlagewerk.
