Seit mehr als 35 Jahren gilt der „Pahl/Beitz: Konstruktionslehre“ unter Maschinenbau-Studenten als das Standardwerk für die Konstruktionsmethodik. Das mittlerweile in acht Sprachen übersetzte Lehrbuch bietet einen aktuellen Überblick über Methoden und Werkzeuge der Produktentwicklung und Produktplanung. Dank der hoch spezialisierten Autoren bleibt das Lehrbuch immer auf dem aktuellen Stand und deckt alle neuen Entwicklungen in der Konstruktionslehre ab. Das Buch stellt die verschiedenen Phasen der Produktentwicklung in vier großen Abschnitten dar und beginnt mit den Einflüssen und Rahmenbedingungen, die bei der Entwicklung und Konstruktion zu beachten sind. Sowohl anhand von KMU aber auch Großunternehmen beschreiben die Autoren die Besonderheiten und Herausforderungen des Produktentstehungsprozesses (PEP) und seiner Teilprozesse. Der Augenmerk liegt dabei auf der Produktarchitektur, der virtuellen Produktentwicklung sowie dem Rapid Prototyping. Ein weiterer Teil des Lehrbuchsstellt ausführlich verschiedene Lösungsmethoden für Probleme während der Entwicklungsphase vor. Die Autoren unterscheiden zwischen problemorientierten und lösungsorientierten Ansätzen und stellen darüber hinaus verschiedene Bewertungsmethoden, die Feinheiten der Produkt-Dokumentation und die ERP-Systeme vor. Ein dritter Teil betrachtet die Regeln zur Gestaltung von Bauteilen, Baugruppen und des ganzen Produkts – ausgerichtet an den heutigen Fertigungsmöglichkeiten. Abschließend widmen sich die Beiträge der Rationalisierung des technischen Bereichs im Unternehmen. Dafür erläutern die Autoren nicht nur die Engineering-Prozesse im Rahmen der Produktarchitektur, sondern auch Module, Features und Referenzvarianten sowie den Aufbau eines Konfigurationsmanagementsystems. Auch diese Neuauflage des 2013 völlig neu konzipierten Lehr- und Fachbuch für Studium und Praxis wurde für die Neuauflage überarbeitet und aktualisiert. Die Autoren kommen aus Hochschulen und Industrieunternehmen undgarantieren somit, dass der Stand der Technik für Entwicklung und Konstruktion gleichermaßen aus aus theoretischer und praktischer Sicht dargestellt wird.
