Diese wurden bereits erfolgreich in der Medizin, in der Robotik sowie u. a. in der Getriebesteuerung von Hybridfahrzeugen eingesetzt. In geschlossenen Darstellungen zeigt es zuerst die theoretischen Grundlagen und anschließend praktische Beispiele, wobei bei den Beispielen auch fehlerhafte Ansätze gezeigt werden. Ausgehend von linearen Systemen und ihren Einschränkungen werden nichtlineare Systeme sowie grundlegende Lernverfahren eingeführt. Darauf aufbauend werden intelligente Verfahren, z.B. der lernfähige, nichtlineare Beobachter, entwickelt sowie die Identifikation von nichtlinearen Systemen und deren Optimierung behandelt. Anschließend werden Regelungsverfahren von nichtlinearen Systemen vorgestellt, wobei die modellbasierte adaptive Regelung sowie die Regelung von unbekannten Systemen Schwerpunkte sind. Den Abschluss bildet ein Kapitel über Fuzzy-Logik. Die Verfahren können bei vielen nichtlinearen Systemen angewendet werden und wurden bereits äußerst erfolgreich in der Medizin, in der Robotik und in der Getriebesteuerung von Hybridfahrzeugen eingesetzt. Neu an der zweiten Auflage sind Kapitel über robuste Schätzverfahren und Concurrent Learning.
