Description

The indigenous people of India, commonly known as tribals, live in isolated remote areas, endowed with natural resources. In recent period, rapid industrial growth took place in these areas. This book talks about the impact of the development of both formal and informal industries on the livelihood condition of the local population in one of these tribal populated regions - the Koraput district of South Orissa, which had witnessed high economic growth in the recent period due to the growth of the manufacturing sector. A household level survey on tribal and non-tribal population shows that the impact of industrialization on the economic condition of the native rural population would vary depending upon the distance of the rural area from those industries. It was found that infrastructural facilities and employment opportunities are better in villages nearer to the industrial centres. The income of the rural population and the consumption expenditure of the tribal households are also higher in these villages. However, while data suggests significant impact of industrialization, other factors like state of agricultural development and public welfare schemes also play crucial roles.
