Актуальность предлагаемого в данной работе исследования обусловлена тем, что реальное изменение требований к профессиям, связанным с коммуникацией и межкультурным взаимодействием нашло лишь частичное воплощение в соответствующих государственных образовательных стандартах по специальностям "Теория и методика преподавания иностранных языков и культур", "Лингвистика", "Иностранный язык" и др. Госстандарт регламентирует в целом, хотя и компетентностный, но все же традиционный предметно-дисциплинарный подход к профессиональной подготовке. А между тем, при обучении иностранным языкам наиболее отчетливо проявляется связь личностных особенностей с успешностью обучения. Цель исследования состоит в разработке психологической модели взаимодействия мотивации и способностей к иностранным языкам, выявлении механизмов и условий, при которых было бы возможно достижение высокого уровня мотивации овладения языком и, соответственно достижение высокого уровня владения им вне зависимости от уровня потенциальных языковых способностей, и, в частности, вопреки недостаточному уровню их развития.
