Zunächst werden die Begrifflichkeiten erklärt. Anschließend wird der „Maschinenmensch" Heron von Alexandria vorgestellt. Dabei wird geklärt, in welcher Zeit er gelebt und wann er seine Schriften verfasst haben könnte. Auch wird über die Geschichte, Herrschaftsverhältnisse und Religion informiert. Danach werden seine schriftlichen Werke aufgelistet und deren Inhalt kurz vorgestellt. Herons Erfindungen und Verbesserungen anderer Erfindungen wirken bis in unsere Zeit. Teilweise werden die Mechanismen dieser Erfindungen heute noch verwendet. Anschließend erfolgt die Beschreibung der Funktionsweise des stehenden und des fahrenden Automatentheaters anhand der Szenendarstellung bzw. des gezeigten Theaterstücks. Zum Schluss wird die Geschichte der Automaten und der Rechnertechnik erläutert. Die Arbeit endet mit einer kurzen Zusammenfassung der gewonnenen Resultate und einem Ausblick auf weitere Forschungsfelder dieses Themenbereichs.
